The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital
The new women’s and children’s hospital to be built in Sunshine will be named after the late Premier Joan Kirner AC.
The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital will cater for the growing needs of Melbourne’s west which is experiencing significant growth, with the number of births at Sunshine Hospital projected to exceed 7,000 per year by 2026.
The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital will bring together the distributed facilities for women’s and children’s services into a contemporary, multi-storey facility.
It will have:
- 32 children’s inpatient beds
- 64 women’s inpatient beds
- 39 special care nursery cots
- 4 operating theatres
- 20 labour delivery rooms, and
- additional ambulatory clinics.
Fifty-five of existing adult acute bed will be refurbished in situ as part of the project.
The new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital will allow for more women in Melbourne’s west to be able to give birth and access children’s services closer to home.
